@AragornBlackthorn Try listening to it more often than once every couple of years. A music education doesn't really have anything to do with it, any more than sex education helps you appreciate, well, you know... If you listen to it a few times, your ear will get accustomed to it. Maybe you still won't like it, but it won't be because it's somehow "exclusive." It really isn't.

@AragornBlackthorn Just don't think you don't have to think, just listen. No one is going to sit there and talk to you about the half-valve a-flat that Miles Davis plays toward the end of his solo, or tell you that this piece modulates back and forth from D-major to E-flat dorian, or that most of this is a series of whole tones and arpeggiated cadenzas. None of that stuff matters, because all we have to do is hear. Just hear it.

I don't play music, so I don't know how hard this is to play. I do listen to music, and I do know how hard it is to listen to.Every other year or so I try listening to Coltraine, Davis, jazz in general and just find it really ... excluding. There is nothing about it that invites me, the listener without a musical education, to enjoy it. I listen to this and feel like I'm at a cocktail party listening to a conversation full of inside jokes I don't get from people I don't know.
